Comic block review - June 2015

Comic block review - June 2015

That moment when you receive any sort of subscription box is exciting!

I should know, this isn't my first. I feel like I should start by explaining my previous experiences because I imagine there are other girls and guys out there like me who have found subscription boxes to be lacking. I found as a Canadian subscriber to Lootcrate that I wasn't receiving 30$ worth of content, which is what the box was costing me more or less.

When I switched to Nerdblock (that is based in Ontario!) I was hopeful to find more value. However after a few months of trying it out I found the classic box lacked something that Lootcrate had down, a theme. All the items seemed to be from a different game or show, so most things ended up going to my little brother who recognized them. All the same, I loved the t-shirts and I felt that if they centered their boxes more I would possibly like them. I gave up nerdy boxes at that time with that shiny hope that time would come.

And here it is with the Comicbox!

I love comics, and I love receiving a t-shirt so this was the best of both worlds.

So, starting with the smallest item, I like the Avengers so I am pleased by it, but I do know these pens run out pretty quick so it'll likely be used more for decoration than for purpose.

21st century Tank Girl - This comic was not my favorite out of the three, but I imagine it has an audience out there. I found the artstyle reminded me a lot of the artstyle of the Gorillaz albums. It is edgy, quirky, not something I would have picked out for myself but I still liked the visuals.

Ghost Busters Get Real - This was another one I wouldn't have picked out on my own, but I did really enjoy it, it is a nice throw back to the movies and predictably had them kicking some ghost butt.

Groot - The cover for this comic won me over instantly, it was unique, cute, and had characters that I really recognized and felt enthused by. As soon as I unpacked it I was flipping through the pages and by the time it ended I wished there was more.

Last but not least, the t-shirt, Batman vs Superman themed
Now I'm not sure how I am going to feel about the new movie but I love batman comics so much I have an entire shelf dedicated to it so I am pretty pleased. This will make a great pj shirt because it is quite long and comfortable.

So final thoughts

I'm paying 20$ for this, a box that will introduce me to new content for comic books and will supply me with a new shirt every month. I do feel like nerdblock's statement that it is 60$ of value for 20$ is stretching the value but I'm still pleased with it.
With an approximate value of 4$ each for the 3 comic books & pen, adding the 20$ worth of the shirt (even if shirt punch does sell the shirts for 10$), it comes out to about 36$ of value. The price is more than worth it to me even if not all the comics will be a hit, it is still providing a cheap price for a monthly delight.
